News from HeartMath Call someone intelligent and we typically refer to one’s intellectual ability or ‘brain’ power and not the heart. But research shows that the heart is in fact intelligent, too. The brain in the head is dutifully obeying messages that are being sent from another brain, the one in the heart. The heart isn’t just a throbbing mass of muscle; it’s actually quite a sensitive instrument that is processing critical information, constantly communicating with the brain 4 different ways.

HeartMath(click for the store)

NEUROLOGICALLY. With every beat of the heart, a burst of neural activity is relayed to the brain. The brain in the heart senses hormonal, rate and pressure information, and translates this information into neurological impulses, processes it and sends information back to the brain in the head via the vagus nerve and nerves in the spinal column.

BIOCHEMICALLY. The heart produces the ‘balance hormone’ – ANF. It regulates blood pressure, body-fluid retention and electrolyte homeostasis and exerts its effects widely on the blood vessels, kidneys, adrenal glands and other regulatory regions of the brain. ANF also inhibits release of stress hormones and plays a positive role in reproductive and immune system activity.

BIOPHYSICALLY. With every beat the heart generates a powerful blood pressure wave that travels rapidly throughout the arteries, much faster than the actual flow of blood. These waves of pressure create what we feel as our pulse.

ENERGETICALLY. The heart produces an electromagnetic field that is approximately five thousand times greater in strength than the field produced by the brain. Its power influences every part of our bodies and even broadcasts itself outside the body.

The net of all this is to remind you that your heart affects the way you think. You don’t have a choice. And your emotions¿your feelings–affect your heart. In this you do have a choice. By intentionally shifting to a positive emotional state with HeartMath’s Quick Coherence® Technique (heart focus, heart breathing, heart feeling) you can modify input from your heart to your brain in ways that are good for you.
HeartMath Adds Up!

I’m fanatically interested in new technologies that apply what scientists are learning about the brain. One of my very favorites is a device from HeartMath, called an “emWave.” It gives me feedback about the electromagnetic resonance coming from my heart and brain — and while costing less than $200, does the job better than a “brain mapping” procedure for which I gladly paid $10,000. I use my emWave every day, and believe it’s helping me become permanently calmer and more relaxed. I’ve been giving emWaves to all my friend, life coaches, and clients. ~ Martha Beck, Life-coach, New York Times best selling author, columnist for O, the Oprah Magazine

April is all about de-stressing!

Stress Erodes Wellbeing

With this month being Stress Awareness Month, there is no better action to take than honoring your personal stress levels and taking taking appropriate actions to promote your own well being. If it is appropriate for you, take some time to:

Breathe fully, comfortably & deeply

Take a gentle and reflective walk

Ensure you have enough rest

Excessive stress erodes your physical health, your mental health and adds to a deterioration of your productivity and quality of life. Small actions can make a big difference in your life and each small action added to the next has a cumulative effect. Persist in promoting your own well being.

To support this, The Institute of HeartMath is offering a $50 Rebate!

This awesome discount applies to the Personal Stress Reliever or PSR Adult Learning Programs and you can click on the affiliate banner above to be redirected to the store. (see their website for all the details)

The special coupon code is: SPRING

Note: purchases made help support their research, services & outreach programs that in turn support many others.

Update: More info from HeartMath received this morning:

What is Stress?

Stress is often misunderstood. Many people look at outside events as the source of stress, but, in fact, the experience of stress is actually caused by our emotional reactions to events. A response to stress is expressed as resistance, tension, strain, or frustration and it throws off our mental and emotional equilibrium, keeping us out of sync.

Two people in identical circumstances may respond in very different ways (e.g., one may get outwardly reactive, the other tired and withdrawn) depending upon how they perceive the situation. One thing is certain, stress not only affects our attitudes and outlook, it can also affect our health. By changing how we respond to stressful situations we can change our physiological response to stress.

Stress and eating

Experts now agree that 75% or more of overeating is caused by emotional stress, which means that a lot of us are using food to cope with our feelings. In today’s high-stress society, many of us, adults and children, eat high fat or high sugar foods to soothe emotions or relieve stress and anxiety. You can change your eating habits by changing your reaction to stress.

HeartMath has tools that can help. View the free emWave Program for Stopping Emotional Eating webinar and start your journey toward a healthier you.

Layers of Health with host Nina Wallinder with Howard Martin of HeartMath on Resilience and Building Your Energy Reserves in Changing Times. Includes a technique to help enhance your personal coherence.

Being proactive about our resilience is important in improving our quality of life. Ups and downs are to be expected in life and it is our ability to respond that factors into our personal coherence.

The Resilience Factor: Building Your Energy Reserves During Changing Times

Sometimes life can deal us incredible stressors in terms of health, financial challenge, relationship concerns, and additionally we are all expected to consume and process mass amounts of information. There is rapid change which can influence us negatively or positively.

Howard Martin was gracious in arriving for the call representing HeartMath & we had plenty of time to cover key points:

They help people make attitudinal shifts to better work with ‘what is’

Negativity creates an energy drain making us less resilient to stress

We have our own energy field and are a part of a global field of energy, too

Resilience can be defined as something more than the ability to ‘bounce back’ and can include the ability to deflect and be less affected by stressors in life.

There are real neurochemical changes that occur in personally activating appreciation, true care & compassion for others.

Emotions move faster than the mind & the heart moves faster than the emotions… and the heart gives power to the mind.

We all have the power of the heart and it is with us from birth.

Thank you Howard, for walking us through a coherence technique called “Attitude Breathing,” which can be used easily, several times a day as needed to help refocus and repattern our triggers into a negative state.

A beautiful concept is that we all, through our nobility, our dignity & our personal responsibility can positively affect not just our own life, but the world as well.
